Give a brief bio about yourself and/or your studio
I (Swami Atmarupa Saraswati) opened the Atma Center in August, 1997, as a health and wellness center to serve the community of Cleveland Heights. I was a nurse anesthetist with 25 years in the field and a yoga background and wanted to share my interest in and knowledge of holistic health with the community. I was trained in the tradition of SATYANANDA YOGA ®, and the yoga classes were so popular that I began to train teachers to help me expand our yoga program. We are now a center solely dedicated to teaching yoga and teacher training, and to spreading SATYANANDA YOGA ® in North America. We are the headquarters for SATYANANDA YOGA in North America. In December 2007 I received Poorna Sannyasa initiation from my guru, Swami Niranjanananda, in Bihar, India.
What styles of yoga you teach? / Do you or your studio specialize in one?
SATYANANDA YOGA ®, developed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati. This style of yoga is uniquely adapted to the needs of modern society and is suitable for all ages, body types, and levels of fitness and health.
What makes your teaching or studio unique?
The Atma Center is the only location in the United States, Mexico and Canada authorized to offer Teacher Training in the Satyananda tradition. Also, our instructors are some of the most highly-trained in the nation: Level 1 teachers have completed over 1000 hours of training, generally taking up to 3 years, and Level 2 teachers have completed approximately 2500+ total hours.
Do you or your studio provide other services other than yoga?
We have a retail store that serves both walk-in and online clients and stocks a diverse selection of yoga and health-related items, such as yoga mats & props, books, CDs, neti pots, supplements, and unique gifts. We are one of the few places in the United States that carries a full line of books from Bihar School of Yoga, all of which are written by sannyasins or teachers in our tradition.
What is your favorite yoga posture? And why?
Shavasana because it shows me where my body is holding tensions, allowing me to release them, creating deep relaxation. To rest in shavasana and maintain detached awareness is a form of meditation.
Who is your favorite yoga teacher?
I don’t have a favorite yoga teacher in the modern sense of the terminology, but my guru, Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati is a yoga master.
